Health Benefits of Human Transit

More research findings have come out suggesting that commuting by walking or biking is not only better for the planet, but also better for public health. Leading public health researchers are encouraging policy-makers to divert more resources toward building ‘human transit’ friendly infrastructure (that is, infrastructure that promotes pedestrian and bicycling activity), stressing that “the real bottom line of climate change is its risk to human health and quality of life.”

Regardless of your opinion toward the research on climate change, it’s clear that providing (road) infrastructure that discourages the use of automobiles for shorter trips and encourages walking and bicycling can go a long way in improving public health in a region.  These study findings highlight this often-missed connection between public health and development/planning.

Learn more about public health issues (and the effort to establish a regional health department in the Lehigh Valley) by coming out to the RenewLV/League of Women Voters-Lehigh County event tomorrow, December 2, in Coplay at the American Legion Post 426, 134 S. 2nd Street. Refreshments will be served.

Driving directions: From the south, take MacArthur Road (Route 145) north to Lehigh Street (just before Arlington Memorial Park). Turn RIGHT. Follow Lehigh Street to North Front Street. Turn LEFT. Front Street becomes South 2nd Street. American Legion Post 426 is on the LEFT at 134 South 2nd Street (on the corner of So. 2nd St and Center St). [Be weary that you will pass American Legion Post Hokendauqua 739 in Whitehall, PA on your right, which is not the correct location. Keep driving straight on Front St. into Coplay, and the American Legion Post 426 will be on your LEFT.]
